28mm Triumph AAR Urartu vs Assyria

Over the Christmas break, I have slowly been converting my old Assyrian army from DBM to Triumph. Thus far I have managed to squeeze three armies out of my original collection, Babylonian, Assyrian and now Urartu. Although I haven’t quite finished the Urartu I couldn’t resist getting them on the table for a trial run.

Key: SK-Skirmisher: LF- Lightfoot: HD-Horde: RD-Raiders: SP-Spearmen: CH-Chariots (*) General: AR-Archers: JC-Javelin Cavalry: EH- Elite horse: HB- Horse bow:

This is actually my second game as I messed up some of the rules in the first run-through. Having clarified things, I reset the table and went again. Same lists and table layout but two very different results. The last battle began on the flanks and slowly migrated to the centre. This time around both armies formed up and marched straight at each other.

Unlike my first run-through, there were no tricky manoeuvres on the flanks. Just a straightforward march to contact.
Coming under bow fire the Urartians decide to press forward while they still hold the advantage on the right.
The combat is pretty even, two for two. However, the Assyrians have the advantage of moving next.
Gaining four pips. The last stand of horde is moved across to cover a gap in their line. The horse bow returns to support the elite horse and their chariot charges into combat and double-overlap (?? why??).
The fourth pip is spent wheeling into the enemy's flank.
A win, but not by enough to keep the ball rolling.
Not sure why the chariot rushed in here.
A lucky escape for the chariot, but on the right the guardsmen have fallen.
With just two pips the Urartians swamp the King's chariot.
Bugger, the King is dead and therefore moving has become a lot harder for the Assyrians
Rolling a six the Assyrians manage to get all of their cavalry into combat on the enemy's left flank.
The last two pips are used on the right to push the light foot back into combat.
Fourteen points to thirteen and the Urartu has initiative.
Urartu raiders surround the last enemy chariot while their king attacks the elite horse.
Probably should have turned these guys to meet their attackers.
In the final round of combats the Assyrians lost their last heavy chariot. Urartu lost two more light foot. So it ended up being mutual destruction 17 points to 20 in favour of the Assyrians
