The first regular unit off the continental painting blocks, this regiment was part of Hartley’s brigade during the 1777 Pennsylvanian campaign which featured the battles of German town and Brandywine. When I first started painting troops for this project I wasn’t planning on collecting units specific to one particular campaign or battle as I wanted the freedom to paint a good mix of units for point based games. However, pretty much every British and Continental regular unit I’ve painted so far seems to have played a part in this campaign.
Similar to the multiple uniform plate problems pointed out on the introduction page, I’ve also managed to turn up a few variations of this units battledress. The first of which (A) was taken from the Perry brother’s leaflet which shows the 1st Battalion’s 1776 uniform. Formed in 1775 the 1st infantry battalion was re-designated as the 2nd regiment in January 1777. Confusingly the Pennsylvanian rifle battalion which was formed earlier was then re-designated as the 1st regiment. Please note that I have added the white cross belts to my rendition of the Perry’s illustration. The second (B) uniform depicted here is loosely based on a uniform plant by R.J. Marrion.
I found this image with a google search and liked the look of the brown jacket so decided to paint my regiment based on this illustration. Uniform (C) is based on yet another drawing that can be found on the Perry’s leaflet. Listed as the 2nd Pennsylvanian regiment (1776 variant), it mirrors the 2nd battalions uniform (1776 variant) pictured on the same leaflet. The last example (D) was also found on the internet and highlights a possible post 1778 version of their uniform.
Like the other infantry regiments in my continental army not covered in the GMB range this command element carries one of my home baked colours.
This flag was based on the Perry’s rendition which although superior to mine in looks I found their choice of paper just a little too shinny for my tastes.
